Injecting the lips, usually with hyaluronic acid, is a minimally invasive procedure, but it does involve risks and possible complications. Here are the most common complications that can occur: 1. swelling and redness
– Cause: The lips are sensitive, so a temporary reaction after treatment is normal.
– Course: Swelling and redness usually subside within 1-2 days. 2. bruising (hematoma)
– Cause: A blood vessel may be injured.
– Course: The bruises heal on their own after a few days. 3. irregular shape or lump formation
– Cause: Uneven distribution of hyaluronic acid or hardening.
– Solution: Can often be corrected by massage or, in rare cases, by an enzyme (hyaluronidase). 4. infection
– cause: unclean work or inadequate aftercare can lead to infection.
– treatment: antibiotics or medical treatment are required. 5. allergic reactions
– Cause: Rare, but possible in case of intolerance to the substance used.
– Symptoms: Severe swelling, itching or breathing difficulties. 6. vascular occlusion (vascular complications)
– Cause: If the hyaluronic acid is accidentally injected into a blood vessel.
– Consequences: Lack of oxygen in the tissue, necrosis (death of tissue) or, in extremely rare cases, blindness.
– Solution: Immediate application of hyaluronidase and emergency medical care. 7. overcorrection
– Appearance: Lips appear excessively large or “overfilled”.
– Solution: Hyaluronidase can help to break down the substance.
Long-term complications:
– In rare cases, nodules or granulomatous reactions may occur if the body does not completely break down the hyaluronic acid. How can complications be minimized?
1. Choose an experienced and qualified doctor or alternative practitioner.
2. Avoid blood-thinning medication (e.g. aspirin) before the treatment.
3. Follow the aftercare instructions (e.g. cooling, no alcohol, no heat).
4. Inform the doctor about allergies or pre-existing conditions. If you are considering having such a procedure performed, a detailed consultation is crucial. If you have any questions, please let me know!
